TSA extends face mask requirements through January 18, 2022

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is extending the face mask requirement for individuals across all transportation networks throughout the United States, including at airports, on board commercial aircraft, on over-the-road buses, and on commuter bus and rail systems through January 18, 2022.

Penalty for refusal to wear a face mask

Effective Friday September 10, 2021, TSA increased the range of civil penalties that may be charged against individuals who violate the federal mask mandate in U.S. transportation systems covered by the January 31, 2021, Security Directive, and subsequent amendments, implementing the mask mandate. The new range of penalties will be $500-$1000 for first offenders and $1000-$3000 for second offenders.

Wearing a mask over your nose and mouth is required on planes, buses, trains, and other forms of public transportation traveling into, within, or out of the United States and while indoors at U.S. transportation hubs such as airports and stations. Travelers are not required to wear a mask in outdoor areas of a conveyance (like on open deck areas of a ferry or the uncovered top deck of a bus). CDC recommends that travelers who are not fully vaccinated continue to wear a mask and maintain physical distance when traveling.

Airlines – Traveling During the COVID-19 Pandemic:

Delta Air Lines:

Delta customers, employees and partners are required to wear a face mask or appropriate cloth face covering over their nose and mouth throughout their travel.

Federal law requires each person to wear a mask at all times while in the airport and when using public transit, during boarding and deplaning, and for the duration of the flight. Refusal to wear a mask is a violation of federal law and may result in denial of boarding, removal from the aircraft, and/or penalties.

Alaska Airlines:

Alaska Airlines is taking a “layered approach” to safety, which starts with the requirement that all employees and guests wear a face mask or covering through the airport and on board. This requirement applies even if you are fully vaccinated.

United Airlines:

Federal law requires all travelers age 2 and older to wear a face mask with no vents or openings that fully covers their nose and mouth. Masks must be worn in the airport and during the entire flight, and between bites and sips if travelers are eating or drinking. This includes customer service counters and kiosks, airport lounges, gates, and baggage claim areas. A face shield alone does not count as a face covering. Travelers who aren’t wearing their masks in the airport or on board may be refused transport, be subject to fines, and could also lose their travel privileges on future United Flights.

  • Information from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has been posted around the terminal (in both English and Spanish), highlighting facts, symptoms, and personal hygiene best practices as they relate to the virus
  • Guidance from local healthcare professionals and the local hospital has been provided to all airport tenants, including airlines and TSA, with instructions on how to respond if someone is ill or feels they may have been exposed to the virus
