World Tourism Day Sept. 27, 2022

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is the United Nations agency responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable, and universally accessible tourism.

It was at its third session (Torremolinos, Spain, Sept. 1979), when the UNWTO General Assembly decided to institute World Tourism Day, commencing in 1980. The timing of World Tourism Day is particularly appropriate as it comes at the end of the high season in the northern hemisphere and the beginning of the season in the southern hemisphere.

As we re-emerge from the pandemic, UNWTO plans to highlight the opportunity to rethink how we conduct tourism at this year’s conference. The group plans to focus on putting people and the planet first. The goal is to bring everyone from governments and businesses to local communities around a shared vision for a more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient sector.

Here are a few ways you can celebrate World Tourism Day this year:

  • Go online and travel virtually
  • Update your virtual background
  • Change your screensaver to a destination you have never been to
  • Scrapbook or frame photos from past travels
  • Read over travel journals
  • Make a travel image board (places you’d like to travel to)
  • Prepare dishes from other countries
  • Plan a trip
  • Book services with local guides/outfitters
  • Visit your local museums, galleries, and other attractions unique to your location
