Air Traffic Control Tower (ATCT) Replacement

Air Traffic Control Tower (ATCT) Replacement

The Friedman Memorial Airport Authority (FMAA), owner and operator of the Friedman Memorial Airport (the Airport or SUN), together with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), is proposing to replace SUN’s existing Air Traffic Control Tower (ATCT). The existing federal contract ATCT at SUN is located within the Runway Object Free Area (ROFA) and Part 77 transitional surface.

In accordance with its responsibilities under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of 1969, the FAA is the lead federal agency for the completion of the EA. During the EA process, the FAA, SUN, and its airport consultant cooperatively evaluated the environmental, economic, and social impacts of the proposed development according to US DOT and FAA guidance and thresholds of significance. No significant impacts were identified. The deadline for public comment period closed on February 13, 2026.  All substantive comments received by the deadline will be addressed in the Final EA.

All comments submitted during the public comment period will be reviewed by Airport Staff, FMAA, the Airport’s environmental consultants, and the FAA. All comments will be posted within the final Environmental Assessment while substantive comments will be addressed by the FAA.
