Infrastructure Optimization Study

2025 Infrastructure and Optimization Study

The Friedman Memorial Airport Authority (FMAA), owner and operator of the Friedman Memorial Airport (the Airport or SUN) is conducting a planning study to evaluate the feasibility of meeting Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) airport design standards. While this has been studied in the past, there have been some changes in operational conditions and FAA design standards since the 2018 Master Plan, warranting a reevaluation.

This planning effort will update aeronautical forecasts and facility requirements considering how both past operational changes and forecast/potential operational changes impact existing infrastructure relative to FAA design standards. It will also include an alternatives analysis that involves revisiting past alternatives and potentially developing new alternatives that meet or incrementally meet FAA design standards. The Study will identify recommended practices and infrastructure improvements for consideration by FMAA. Lastly, this Study will also provide additional justification for the Airport to proceed with much-needed facility improvements, including passenger terminal improvements and construction of a snow removal equipment (SRE) storage building.
